Kvarner

Kvarner (www.kvarner.hr) is one of the most developed tourist regions in Croatia, easily accessed by European countries.  In the language of the old Romans who, we are led to believe, gave the name to this area with the word Qua(te)rnarius, meaning “four divine directions”, thus indicating that the Kvarner area is the meeting point of those directions.  There are 9 sub-regions included under the name Kvarner in the tourist region, with the town of Rijeka as its centre.  Kvarner stretches from the Opatija Riviera through Rijeka and its surroundings to the Crikvenica Riviera, Novi Vinodolski Riviera, including Krk, Rab, Cres and Lošinj as well as Gorski Kotar.

The differences of the region, climatic and vegetational, the combination of coast, islands and mountain chain, architecture and culture, are ideal for whole-year round numerous tourist attractions and certainly for development of selective forms of tourism for those with a wide variety of needs throughout the four seasons.

Summers are pleasant in Gorski Kotar while snowy winters offer ideal conditions for winter sports.

With a capacity of 173,000 accommodation units and visits numbering over 2 million guests, Kvarner achieves more than 11 million overnights annually, i.e. one fifth of the total tourist business of Croatia.
