Carnival and Balinjerada in Opatija

Carnival

The Carnival time is so rooted in the tradition of Opatija that it was dubbed the fifth season by the locals.

Each year, starting with the feast day of St. Anthony the Abbot, Opatija dons the mask and for the next six weeks exchanges worries and daily routine for a fun filled frolick.

This is a truly magical time , filled with laughter, joy, and confetti.

Balinjerada

Witness a mad soapbox race with vehicles showcasing the odd mix of creativity and engineering prowess, gift-wrapped in a carnival attire.

Each January, a slew of wacky creations whoosh past the enraptured crowd making the narrow streets and alleyways of Opatija even smaller.
